18F-FDG
Whole body diagnostics

18F-FDG (fluorodeoxyglucose) is a glucose molecule in which one of the hydroxyl groups is replaced by the radioactive isotope fluorine-18.

Our body uses glucose for energy, so tumor cells consume more glucose than normal cells due to their active growth. This means that 18F-FDG molecules are concentrated in the place where glucose is actively consumed in particular tumor cells.

Fluorodeoxyglucose is versatile

1
It is absorbed by all cells, since its structure is close to ordinary glucose
2
Tumor cells accumulate the drug faster than healthy cells, so they are clearly visible on the scan
3
Excreted from the patient's body within 24 hours
