Fluoroethyltyrosine

18F-FET
A tracer for brain tumors diagnosing

A complex of a conditionally essential amino acid (synthesized by the body from an essential amino acid) and a radioactive isotope fluorine-18.

Amino acids and their derivatives participate in protein synthesis, are precursors of neurotransmitters and some hormones. Although 18F-FET does not participate in such metabolic processes, special cell transporters allow it to penetrate cancer cells and accumulate in them. Due to its high specificity to tumor cells, 18F-FET actively accumulates in biologically active tumor cells and practically does not accumulate in healthy cells, which allows obtaining a contrast image during the scanning. This specificity is characteristic of tumors of varying degrees of malignancy.
